Week of December 15th-19th

Exciting Events:

On Tuesday the students will have art as well as physical education. Ms. Dubreil was kind enough to give students a chance to make-up their missed art classes from all the two hour delays last week.

On Friday students will participate in our annual Holiday Celebration, the theme this year is Holiday games, focusing on Holidays around the world.

We will also be going down to see the Holiday Trees at the Town Hall on Friday.

On both Thursday and Friday we will be reading "The House Without a Christmas Tree" all together. This story is about the same girl we read about with Ms. Fonte during Thanksgiving.

Library News:

Mrs. Palin would like to help encourage students to read during the Holiday Break, she has asked all teachers to share the link to her blog, for good book reads, and great ideas for holiday gifts.

This Week in Fifth Grade:

Writing: We are still working on persuasive essays, students should be finishing up their essays on "Should College Athletes be Paid" and beginning their persuasive essays on a topic of their choice.

Science: We are finishing our brochures on Electrical Safety using an app on Google Drive.

Social Studies: We continue our journey across the country on the Oregon Trail. Students continue to work in wagon trains to see if they can survive the trip.

Math: We are finishing chapter 5 this week. We will begin a new chapter when we return in the new year.

Reading: We are reading the book "Bound for Oregon" together. It is about a family and their trials and tribulations on the Oregon Trail.

WIN: Students continue to work in their Literature Circle Groups.

Spelling: Please continue to help your student study their spelling words.

Week of December 8th - 12th

This Weeks Special Activities:

Ms. Fonte will be coming in on Friday to read a Christmas Math Story to us. 

This Week in Fifth Grade:

Writing: We are finishing up our first Argumentative Writing assignment, and will begin researching for a new topic this week. 

Science: We are typing up and finalizing our brochures on electrical safety this week. Hopefully next week we will be able to begin our videos. 

Social Studies: We continue to move westward! Students are participating in individual wagon trains and are picking their routes, supplies, and trail guides. 

Math: We are still plugging away at Topic 5- Dividing by 2-Digit Divisors. We are looking to complete the Topic and have our test by Wednesday of next week. 

Reading: We continue to read closely and are focusing on current event articles and Scholastic News

WIN: Students continue to read their literature circle group books. 

Spelling: Please help your child study his/her spelling words. 

Coming Up:

Next Friday students will be participating in "Games of the Holidays" if you would like to participate in (or run) one of the events, please let the office know. 

BLIZZARD BAGS!

In the event that we have a Blizzard Bag Day this week. Please remember to bring in the materials the following day in order to get credit. Remember that if we do not have 80% participation, the day does not count and we have to make the day up again. We have shared the BB files with students through their Google Docs, and will be available for any questions all day. Don't forget, there are online options for the students too, and these replace the hard copies, YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO BOTH!

Week of December 1st - 5th

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving Break, and that you were not out of power for too long! We are very thankful for all the linemen and women who gave up their family time to help restore our power.

This Week:

Writing: We are continuing to learn about argument writing, and how to convince others using a combination of facts and opinions.

Science: We will be beginning our research on electrical safety this week. By the end of the week we will have filled in our top down web, and will be ready to begin our brochures next week.

Social Studies: We will continue on with Westward Expansion, focusing on the Oregon Trail.

Math: We are finishing up Topic 4 and will be starting Topic 5, which is on dividing by 2 digit divisors.

Reading: We will be working on close reading, looking for details in our reading and deciphering the difference between facts and opinion in articles.

Win: Students are working in small groups with different literature circle books. Currently these books include; Stone Fox, Number the Stars, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, and Three Times Lucky.

Week of November 17-21

Happy Monday, this is our last full week before Thanksgiving! If you are planning on being out either of the days before Thanksgiving, please let us know.

Weekly Events:

Thursday and Friday - Mrs. Fonte will be coming in to read a Thanksgiving story to us. We will then watch the video of it.

Friday- We have our monthly assembly this week. As usual the students will see the story pirates perform their stolen story.

This Week in Fifth Grade:

Writing: We are beginning to talk about opinion writing, and the difference between opinion and fact.

Science: We are starting an Electrical Safety Unit, where the students will create brochures and a PSA.

Social Studies: We are learning about the USS Constitution, Lewis and Clark, and continuing our exploration of West Ward Expansion.

Math: We are looking to finish up this topic on Dividing by 1 Digit Divisors, and will start the new unit after the holiday break.

Reading: We continue to work on close reading and pulling important facts from our reading.

WIN: Students are still working on their literature circle group books, some will be starting a new book this week!

Week of November 10- 14

Happy Wednesday!
We hope you all enjoyed your four day weekend! We also want to thank any Veterans for their service to our country.

Week Events:
Scholastic Book Orders were due today. (I will offer an extension until tomorrow)
I (Ms.Connor) will be out Thursday and Friday for a conference in MA.

This Week in Fifth Grade:
Writing: We will begin discussing the difference between fact and opinion, as an opener to persuasive writing.
Science: We will be doing a short project on what life would be like without electricity.
Social Studies: Westward Expansion/ Lewis and Clark
Math: We are continuing with our unit on dividing by 1 digit divisors. We should be having a test on this material next week.
Reading: We are continuing to work on text based questions, and reading closely.
WIN: Students are still working on their literature circle groups, many groups should be finishing up soon, and are getting ready to start their next book!

Coming Up:
Smarter Balance Test, layout practice with Mrs.Palin will begin in the next week.
