Week of October 27-31

Happy Monday!


Special Events:

Friday will be the Halloween Parade and class activity. Please let either of us know if you do not want your child participating in the snack. Also please do not send your child to school with a snack on that day. Please remember students cannot have any blood or weapons as part of their costumes at school. Please also do not send your child to school wearing their costume. They will have a moment to change before the parade begins.

Conferences are coming up next week. If you have forgotten what time you signed up for, or if that time no longer works, please let us know and we will reschedule.

Blizzard Bags will be going home on Thursday! We have also shared an electronic copy of the Blizzard Bag with each student on their Google Drive.

This Week:

Writing: We are beginning to talk about the Six Traits of Writing, and will be editing our narrative stories.

Science: We are still working on circuits and electricity.

Social Studies: We will be wrapping up the Bill of Rights.

Math: We are finishing up Topic 3 and will be having a test this week. Students will also be given the opportunity to "test out" of Topic 4. They will be given the end of topic test, and if they earn a 90 or above they will have the opportunity to partake in enrichment activities.

Reading: Students will be reading and discussing spooky stories. The focus will be on asking questions while they read.

WIN: We are continuing to work in our Literature Circle Groups, the students are starting to really enjoy their books.

Lady Long Rider Bernice Ende Visits Simonds

Week of October 20- October 24


We have a very busy week this week! 

A Few Interesting Events:


Today we will be going outside to see Lady Long Rider, as she makes her way through New Hampshire. Check back here for some pictures of our meeting! Also if you would like more information on her go to her blog: http://www.endeofthetrail.com/blog/

Tomorrow Mrs. Fonte will be coming in to talk with us about the Constitution and share some of her artifacts she has collected over the years.

On Friday, as a part of Digital Citizenship Week, Mrs. Prewandowski will be coming in to talk to our students about their "digital footprints" and proper blog etiquette as part of our GRIT lesson.

This Week In Fifth Grade:


Writing: We continue to work on writing narratives and expanding our writing to include character development and problem and solution.

Reading: We are working on  asking questions to help guide our reading.

Science: We are starting our new science unit on Electricity. We will start exploring circuits and and how electricity works.

Social Studies: We are still working on the branches of government, this week we will complete learning about the Judicial Branch.

Math: We are learning to multiply two digit numbers this week.

WIN: We are working in Literature Circle Groups. Ask your student about the book they are reading.

Week of October 13-17

Happy Tuesday!

We hope you all enjoyed your long weekend, and the festivities of the WFFF!

This week in fifth grade:
Writing: We continue to work on narrative stories, with distinct beginnings, middles, and ends. We are starting to work on developing strong main characters and introductions that grab the attention of the reader. Students have been getting their inspiration from silly pictures displayed on the board.

Reading: Students continue working in their literature circle groups, reading independently, and working on story features.

Math: Students had their Topic 2 test last week, and we will begin Topic 3 on Multiplying Whole Numbers this week. This should be a bit of a review. It would be beneficial to your student to practice his/her multiplication facts at home, too.

Science: We will be finishing up the Scientific Method this week and will be having a test on Friday. Students will leave class on Wednesday with a study guide, Thursday we will study together, and Friday will be the test.

Social Studies: We continue to learn about the Three Branches of Government and The Bill of Rights.

Other News:
Scholastic book orders will arrive this week!
We will be having our second Friday assembly this week.

Week of October 6-9

We have a short week, Friday is a teacher workshop!

This Week in Fifth Grade:
Writing: We will be finishing up our Constitution Persuasive Writing and move on to some narrative writing.
Science: We are beginning to discuss the importance and role of the Scientific Method.
Social Studies: We will be delving deeper into the branches of government.
Math: We will be having our second math test on adding and subtracting decimals and will begin our third unit on multiplying whole numbers.
Reading: We are really getting into our literature circle groups. Students are reading one of the following books: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Three Times Lucky, Surprises According to Humphrey, or All The Wrong Questions: Who Could That Be At This Hour.


Students will begin Math Cart this week. Our new staff member, Mrs.Abbot will be coming around to do quick math activities with each class on Wednesday afternoons.
